Communications
In addition to your navigation system, IMS American Marine Electronics stresses the importance of integrating a reliable communications system into your electronics package.
VHF
IMS American advises that all vessels carry a marine VHF (very high frequency) radio onboard. This basic communication device is relatively inexpensive, has no monthly user fees and can be used for daily voice communications as well as emergency calls. All fixed-mount marine VHF radios have some level of DSC (Digital Selective Calling) calling capability, which, at the simplest level, gives you the ability to alert other boats, ships and shore stations with the press of a button. IMS American enables you to get the most from your VHF by connecting your radio to a remote microphone creating an inter-ship intercom system. Some VHF radios have built-in hailers which IMS can connect to an external hailer horn to act as a public address system or fog signal when conditions warrant. IMS American can also integrate some VHF radios with voice scramblers or Bluetooth headsets.
SSB
IMS American recommends supplementing your communications package with a single-sideband radio (SSB). A SSB radio can be used for sending and receiving information, such as weatherfaxes and e-mail, listening to voice weather broadcasts or news when you are out of normal FM radio range, and for communicating with other vessels over great distances. A SSB radio can also send and receive upper sideband (USB), lower sideband (LSB), AM and ham frequency signals.
Antennas
IMS American only installs quality antennas for its customers. After all, your onboard radio system(s) can only be as good as the signals sent and received by your antenna. Depending on your needs, a marine antenna can send and receive VHF, cellular, HF, SSB, wireless LAN, GPS and UHF signals.
Satellite Communications
Stay in constant touch, no matter where you are, with satellite broadband Internet and phone. IMS American can design a custom satellite communications package to fit your needs, travel plans and budget.
